Reid takes out his ire on visiting Nevada kids [Reprinted from the June 5, 1998 Elko Daily Free Press editorial page] We understand U.S. Sen. Harry Reid has alienated even more local residents. That's good news, in light of the fact he must face voters this fall. We have been frequent critics of the misguided senator over the years and he, in turn, has sent regular insults back to us. But in his latest snit, he has sunk to new lows -- even for Harry Reid. Elko High School traditionally rewards some of its best students with a trip to Washington, D.C., to take in the sights and visit with lawmakers. The program has operated smoothly for years and the visits with home-state politicians had always been a highlight of the trip. This year, however, the students crossed paths with a surly Sen. Reid, who abruptly cancelled one appointment and the next day could only manage an insult of their hometown paper before turning his back on the teens and retreating in a sulk. Fine treatment from a man paid to serve them. We are truly sorry that Sen. Reid took out his anger toward us on the visiting students, but also think the incident can serve as an important civics lesson. The encounter speaks volumes about the character of Harry Reid, who was in this very building just weeks ago and walked right past our offices without mustering the courage to question our opinions directly. Mistreating innocent students was a cowardly act and such a man is undeserving of the honor of representing them in the U.S. Senate. We urge the snubbed students and all other Nevadans to join forces this fall in voting Reid out of office. We'll all be better off. |
